Histotechnologists

HistotechnologistsA histotechnologist is a highly trained individual who processes the patients specimen through a series of steps that eventually produce the glass slides examined under the microscope by our pathologists. Each slide consists of an extremely thin slice of tissue measuring 2-4 micrometers thick that has been stained with specific stains and chemicals that highlight the desired aspects of the cells composing the specimen.  All of our histotechnology staff are board certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology and have over 50 years of combined experience in preparing specimens for microscopic examination.

Juan Gutierrez, H.T. (A.S.C.P.)Juan Gutierrez, H.T. (ASCP) is an experienced Histology Technician who has worked in his chosen field since 1992. Mr. Gutierrez received his education at the University of New Mexico with training in cell biology and molecular biology. He also has biochemistry laboratory research experience. Prior to joining Precision Pathology Services, Juan served as the supervisor of a busy hospital-based laboratory which provided a full spectrum of histology services. He has extensive experience in preparing the microscopic slides required for frozen section analyses (the process of searching for tumor cells while the patient is still in surgery under anesthesia). He has also performed specialized immunohistochemical staining procedures to support clinical research for the treatment of lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes). Juan’s experience also includes the following positions: Histology Training Program Instructor, College of American Pathologists Laboratory Inspector, Laboratory Quality Assurance Officer, Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Officer and Laboratory Safety Officer.

Amber Hurst, H.T. (ASCP)Amber Hurst, H.T. (ASCP) was introduced to the field of histology by one of her close friends and fell in love with the scientific art of developing microscopic slides from specimens. After graduating from the UTHSCSA School of Histology, Amber joined the team at Precision Pathology and procured the position of Histotechnologist. Amber’s passion for histology is reflected in the high quality of her work. Her goal is to provide excellent patient care. Amber looks forward to applying her knowledge and experience to meticulously prepare slides from our patient’s specimens for pathological review.
